January 19, 201313 yr I need to know if I can change the clutch by removing the axle nuts nd sliding the tranny back to get to the clutch. Thank you Jack
January 19, 201313 yr No such luck. Gotta drop the trans or pull the engine. I think SAAB is the one that you can swap clutches without pulling either.
January 19, 201313 yr Well, technically the engine doesn't have to be removed. When I did my XT I unbolted the motor from trans, exhaust, and moved it forward to where I could get the clutch and flywheel off in car.
January 19, 201313 yr It is easier to slide the engine forward. this can be done with 2 men and no crane. But if you went that far, you can just lift the motor out. If you are trying to work from underneath, you have to separate the trans from the engine some 3 inches to clear the studs just to get in there, and by then you may have well removed it. You would have wanted to remove the axles from the trnas stub, which you would have had to undo the ball joints to allow the room. The axles are pressed into the bearing, so by removing the nuts, all you can take off is the hub and rotor but the axles are still in the hub. search the 'tube for 'art of subaru maintenance' to see some clever engine/trans wrangling
January 23, 201313 yr Hmm ive pulled the trans from below and never had to fiddle with the axle nuts or ball joints. I just popped the pins from the stubs at the trans and dropped the trans far enough for me to side the axles off of it. Then out it came.
