Smelling Gas

Featured Replies

i smell gas when i get off the interstate and only when i get off the interstate any advice im getting like 16 mpg and i cant figure it out ive adjusted the timing replaced both fuel filters and all the vacuum hoses&plugs and wires

Take the air cleaner housing off and inspect the tiny rubber boot on the accelerator pump which sits atop your carburetor. Right up front. Has a lever attached with a pin retainer.

Could be something else but that is a current problem for a couple of us with old carbs.

While you are at it, look for a leaky butterfly valve. That's where mine recently started to stink. Gas was dribbling out the side of the carb through the worn-out bushing.

Right , thanks Ben. The metal fatigue issue ...... grrrrr.

But only coming off the highway ....hmmmm
