Redundant ea82 head bolt question.

Featured Replies

Do any of the cylinder head bolts on my 1988 GL ea82 (non turbo) enter coolant passages?

I am 99% sure that they do not.  (I can't look at one right now to be totally sure.)

Can you describe which ones I need to apply a non-hardening sealer on the threads and the underside of the bolt heads? I overlooked that particular procedure when I went through the headbolt torque sequence. I imagine coolant will get into the crankcase without the sealer? Am I correct?

Yes a couple do

really - that's part of the procedure?  i'm not remembering that but it's been a long time since i've done old gen heads.

I have never uses sealer on ea82 head bolts. But there is always corrosion on the to tob bolts in the center of the head where they thrad into the water jacket for hte intake ort. Usually the the bottom center wil have oil caked on them where they thread into the crank case. I suppose fluids can work their way up the thread, but not necessarily past the gasket.

It started clicking/clacking for awhile until all of the eight HLA's ?? had pumped up. I think thats what they are called? I need to reset the date on my camera.

nice job.  exactly right - HLA's (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters).  they make a world of racket when you first start up a rebuild and can take up to 15 minutes or more to subside.
