1st and 2nd gen trans compatability

Featured Replies

Looking to do a d/r swap on a 1980 brat. Will a dual range trans from a 2nd gen brat from 1982 bolt up with 1st gen brat from 1980. I'm aware the that 1980 brat came as a single range. If any, what mods are needed to make the transplant work?

Thanks!

81 Brat with old body style had dual range 4x4 the 1980 did not.......

Firstly a 1980 Brat will have a top mount starter, all dual range transmissions are side mount starter... If you source a EA71 'fat case' bellhousing (side starter) that would be a start but there are still other issues such as the shifter linkages and in some instances the drivers DOJ might end up very close to the steering shaft. Having stated that, it has been done before!

Might be a good idea to search the forum for previous threads on this subject as it does come up fairly often.

When i put a D/R in my '80 Brat, I ended up swapping everything over. I took out all the EA-71 stuff and replaced it all with EA-81. Engine, tranny, alternator, distributor, coil etc.
