HELP!..2.2 sohc and 2.5 dohc swapping engine parts and motor

Featured Replies

PLESE HELP!!! I have a 1998 legacy outback auto trans 2.5 dohc, it has a bad motor. Taking 2.2 sohc from 1996 legacy Brighton 5 speed. Wanting to know what issues I will have, also will the crank sprocket from the 2.5 work on the 2.2??...

It will be a drop in-bolt on affair. you will have to carry over the flexplate to match the trans, and you will have to swap the header pipe to match the exhaust ports.

the 2.5 may have an EGR that the 5spd may not. you might have to fool the ECU with a resisotr, or tap a hole for the EGR tubing. The 2.5 intake does not bolt onto the 2.2 engine.

If you feel like doing heads, you can put the 2.2 heads on the 2.5 block for more compression and power, but you must use higher octane fuel.

Thanks a lot for the help!. The 2.5 has at very least bent valves, I bought the outback for a song with motor damage, plus I've not heard good things about that 2.5 dohc. I know the 2.2 is a much more reliable choice. My 2.2 motor is in a wrecked car but was well kept and runs strong. Do you know if the crank sprocket for the timing belt from the 2.5 dohc will work on the 2.2 sohc??

The timing belt won't interchange. You'll need an ej22 specific timing belt, but you don't have to change the timing sprocket, all phase 1 engines (both of yours are phase 1 btw) use the same ones. Use the flex plate from the ej25 of course, and bolt the engine in. Only other part you should need is the ej22 exhaust manifold as it is a single port v. the ej25 dual port. The ej22 most likely will not have egr, I've never seen a manual ej22 with egr, and all usdm ej25d had it.

Thanks, I know the the timing belt won't wok (two less cams).. Lol. The reason I ask about the crank sprocket is I removed the one from the 2.2 to put on another car with a 2.2 that I sold thinking I could use the one off the bad 2.5 to replace it, but the 2.2 won't run now with this sprocket, i did notice it had more tabs for the sensor then the one that was on it

the lack of EGR on the ej22 could be a problem.

especially if you need to pass inspection.

an ej22 from an auto trans car usually has EGR and would eliminate this problem.

another solution would be to buy an intake manifold from an egr ej22 car, usually auto 95 - 98.

a better choice for a donor engine would be a 95 ej22 w/ EGR or a 96 - 98 ej22 w/EGR,

usually from an auto trans car.

Use sprokets from car BUT the twin cam 2.5 has plastic cam gear this will not work on 2.2 you may have to locate a 2.2 cam gear to match the car. How many bumps on your cam sproket ?

The cam sprockets are not the issue, I removed the "crank" sprocket from the 2.2 to put on another motor. Now i have a "crank" sprocket from a 2.5 double over head cam motor as a replacement, and now it won't run

What??...that's strange. When I took the original crank sprocket off that motor to put on another one I used the the little triangle on the crank and the small line on each cam and it ram fine...so I did the same thing with the one off the the 2.5...but it's not working

If the crank sprocket is different so is cam sprocket how many bumps on cam sprocket ? and how many on crank sprocket that came of car

if there is a small triangle on the front face of the crank sprocket,

it should be pointing to the 3 o'clock position.

(this will put the key way in the sprocket in the 6 o'clock position.)

the correct timing mark on the crank sprocket is a hash hash mark,

it is located on one of the ''tabs'' on the rear edge of the crank sprocket.
