November 8, 201312 yr I have a 1999 Legacy wagon with a 5 speed manual, 2.2l.somehow the center differential got toasted and I think it will becheaper to drop in a new (used) tranny. From what I've read I can usemost any 5mt as long as the final drive is the same.I have a TY754VAAAA, FINAL DRIVE IS A 3.900.Will all of these tranny's bolt up to my 2.2L (phaze two, if that matters)?I'd also be interested in advice on parts to replace while the tranny is out. November 8, 201312 yr generally speaking, any manual trans 99 - 03 with a 3.9 final drive ratio. this includes the legacy L, brighton, and low end imprezas. you CAN NOT use the manual trans from the outback, GT or high end imprezas (WRX etc.)
November 8, 201312 yr Unless, of course, you also swap the rear diff from the same car. Direct bolt in will have to have the 3.9 ratio. If you found an Outback or Forester donor car, you could put both the transmission and the rear diff in there and you'd have a 4.44 ratio. The ratios just have to match. generally speaking the extra part will cost more $$$ but you never know what you may find. Helps to have options.
November 8, 201312 yr Author Well after calling ten auto wrecking yards in Seattle. They all tell me that my Transmission is a one year only and can only be swapped for an identical unit. If this is true that's a hugh pain. Of course they just looked it up on their computer and told me what the screen said. true or not?

Not just junkyard parts, but aftermarkets as well.. 1999 because it was a transitional year has tons of " one year only " parts which really cover 1999-2003 in most cases. Things like the transmission part numbers changed for 2000.. It's not like my 1995 Chevy truck which is truly a one year only because it has the 'new' interior with the old TBI fuel injection and OBD-1, so things like the gauge cluster is different tho it looks just like the 1996-1998
February 2, 201412 yr I need to look for a transmission for my 97 Impreza Outback, I have yet to find a source to tell me what the final drive ratio is in my car. If it is 3.900 as in the OP can I look for a trans out of any of the cars listed? I don't want to bother calling any of the wreckers till I know exactly what trannys will work.

(except the 96 outback manual trans, it has the ej22 and the 4.1 ratio manual trans, i think.) you can use the manual trans from any ej22 car 95 - 99 except the 96 outback 5 speed. search www.car-part.com , sort by distance. you will have to search each model and year separately.

Thanks, one more question.... is there a tag on the tranny that will tell me it is the correct match as I plan to get a tranny from a wrecker and I will not actually know for sure where they got it. I have in the past been lead down the wrong path with parts from the wreckers.......
February 3, 201412 yr there will be an ID number on the trans bell housing, but there is no way easy way to decipher the year or the ratio. search car-part.com , some of those listing MAY show the ID#. or go to opposedforces.com/parts, look up any model , year, trans, and it will list the trans ID#. but this usually isn't necessary, the salvage yards are usually pretty good, they know where their parts came from, model, year, engine, miles. one tip, if you tell them you are looking for a 97 trans, they will not sell you one from a 96 or a 95. they do not know that those will fit and they do not want the headache of you trying to return it because it is the wrong one. so locate the trans you want o their website, and then call looking for that trans.
