I'm re-using my old pilot bearing because I can't get a replacement locally. I snapped the plastic cover off of one side and cleaned it out with brake cleaner and then stuffed it full of grease. When I was snapping the plastic ring back on, it broke a chunk out of it. Will it lose enough grease for it to make a difference? I really only need the car to last me a year until I can get a newer one. This is an '84 hardtop EA81.

Its an EA81, You'll be fine! In all seriousness, you should do the job properly. But if its all you have then you may just get away with wiping up the excess grease and running it.

 

Loosing grease will be inevitable with a spinning bearing and a damaged seal, worse case scenario the grease will leave the bearing,contaminating the friction disc causing your clutch to slip and your bearing to run dry and maby seizing?. But Im not sure there is even enough grease in there cause slippage.

 

Are you in the middle of replacing a clutch with new components?

 

How much of the seal broke away?

Put the side with bad seal towards crankshaft.

 

That said, you should be able to find that bearing locally, check at a bearing supplier.

I've taken it to Oreillys and they couldn't cross reference so I called the other 4 parts stores and they couldn't get it either. I'm not driving all the way to the nearest Subaru dealer just for a pilot bearing. I'm tossing the old clutch back in, the new one slipped in higher gear. Don't have a clue where any bearing suppliers are around here.

 

And it's about 1/8" missing from the outer edge. If it lasts a year, I'll be happy. I just need to ride it until I can afford something newer.

Timken and National lists it as a 201CC bearing, SKF lists it as a 6201RSJ bearing.

32mm/1.2598" OD

12mm/.4724" ID

10mm/.0397" Width

 

A parts store should be able to order it with that info, probably have one on shelf.
