Outback 1999 - oily hose - help with identification

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have lately discovered an oily film on one of the hoses under the hood (see the pictures). Could you, please help me identify what is that hose: what it its purpose, where is the oil possibly coming from, and what would be the most appropriate repair? Thank you in advance.

Car: Legacy Outback 1999, 170k miles.

Thank you,

Fiszka

Does it come from the drivers side cylinder head. I cant tell from the pics but I think it is the Crankcase ventilation hose. When was the last time the PCV valve was changed?

That's the crankcase breather hose for the drivers side. Those like to harden and split at the ends. That can cause problems wih idle and air/fuel mixture control.

Should be replaced with emissions rated hose. I think a 5/8" I.D. hose will work there. You can get that size at most auto parts stores.

Thank you so much Nipper and Fairtax4me! This helps a lot. I will post about the results of the repair after this weekend.
