window problems

Featured Replies

So, I have a 2000 i got in 2007 with 1026 miles, yes thats correct ! recently the drivers window control for the drivers window stopped working, we bought a switch and replaced it, i do not recall if it was used or not since my husband did order it not me personally, We also put in rain guards since i thought that could of cuased the problem, now less then 8 months the repalcement switch is gone. Was there a problem with this switch? i see others having problems, I am not sure if this is going to keep happening or now can it be cleaned? is there a better upgrade? should i just keep buying used ones since there always going to fail ??? help please ! I get the extra useage on the drives side but i cant understand why we have to replace it again, and like i said it really is only 6 years old, when i bought it i had to totally checked out and they said its pretty much just off the show room since it was in storage for 7 years

It can be disassembled and cleaned. Be sure to coat the contacts in the switch with di-electric grease to prevent problems There were a few years that had issues with the window switches. New switches are way expensive. Don't go that route unless you have to.

Fairtax4me is correct about cleaning the switch contacts. They can be cleaned with a simple pink eraser if the switch is apart. If it isn't, its possible to spray electrical contact cleaner into its seams and then cycle the switch several times to clear up the contacts. This might have to be done 2 or 3 times, depending on how much spray cleaner you get get into the switch.

When doing the spray contact cleaner route, be sure to allow 2 or 3 minutes for the cleaner to evaporate before you turn on the ignition and try the switch. You'll have the possibility for a nasty short circuit otherwise. Buy the electrical contact cleaner at any auto parts dealer or Radio Shack. Good Luck!

If you disassemble the switch, do so in a protected area. I recall opening the switch in my 1991 Loyale while parked in my gravel driveway and then spending a significant amount of time sifting the gravel searching for dropped parts! (As first read in the magazine Doh!)

brus brother is correct again. Put the switch and your hands inside a large zip lock bag or similar, before you open it up. That way any springs, contacts, etc. that decide to take flight end up in the bag. Good Luck!
