March 11, 201412 yr So it all started with me changing my timing belt. after replacing the timing belt and being the dumbass that I am I goodentightened it instead of torqueing the crank pulley bolt. Needless to say the pulled came loose and broke off my wood key and rounded the crank sprocket. I took it upon myself to order a Perrin lightweight pulley since I was getting back in there anyway. Anyway long story short I cant seem to get the sprocket off with just pb blaster and a pry bar. Any suggestions? I've heard using a certain puller tool and tapping the holes on the front of the sprocket to remove it but I just wanted to be sure.
March 11, 201412 yr Are you talking about the timing belt pulley? Don't use a prybar on that one... The only thing you have to pry against is the oil pump, which is likely to crack the housing. If you look at the front of the timing belt sprocket, you will see two holes. Tap them out with an M8x1.25 tap and use a balancer puller to pull it off. Before you attempt to pull it off, use a die grinder/dremel, etc to clean up the crank snout so there's nothing binding it up. Cut off any excess key that's bent over in the path of the pulley, etc
March 11, 201412 yr Yes has two hole in it tap them out with 8.125 tap the you can use a puller on it to remove it with steering wheel puller and two bolts
March 11, 201412 yr They actually tap easier for 5/16 standard thread......unless you want to be a metric purist......the 5/16 is slighty smaller easier to get started.
March 11, 201412 yr I use metric because that's a common size for subarus, I have piles of bolts, all metric tools, and all metric taps, etc. But you're right, m8 is a little bit too big.
March 12, 201412 yr Author I got it off ! Bought a cheap puller tool from harbor freight and pb blasted the spoob out of it haha . Thanks for the help anyway!
