daddycool100
Need to ID tranny i bought on craigs list as it is not the right one for my 2003 forester and i need to sell as seller will not refund money. Tranny was rebuilt from subaru with zero miles and no serial number. Are there any other ways to ID tranny?
CNY_Dave
Auto or manual? If auto, VDC or non-VDC? (we can tell with a pic of the rear case) Has a spot for a spin-on transmission filter, or no? Biggest question is going to be the differential gear ratio, not sure how to check. What makes it not the right one?
Fairtax4me
Diff ratio, roll that sucker over on its top, pop the diff drain plug off and count the teeth on the ring gear. Sometimes you get lucky and find the part number, tooth count, or ratio stamped on the gear.

johnceggleston
the only ''subaru rebuilt'' autoi trans i have seen had a metal tag on it with serial number, date, maybe miles, and other such stuff. i used to have a picture of it. so if yours does not have this, it may not be rebuilt by subaru. and most rebuilders paint them a solid color, gray maybe. how do you know it does not fit your 03 forester? how does it not fit? does not move? does not bolt up? does not plug in? so there are no identifing marks of any kind? most have a VIN etched in to the case on the side, set in a rectangle. easy to do if the trans is out of the car. look for it.
