1997 Impreza OBS Tuning?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times, so I'm gonna ask anyways.

But first a little info on my Impreza..

Just picked it up a few weeks ago. It's a 97 Outback Sport with 266K, full history from '04 and *minor* modifications.

*Forester struts and steelies with 205/70 r15 tires

*Forester front seats

*added groundstraps from the battery to the block to the chassis to prevent future hassle

*high flow air filter from Spectre

I just did a complete tune up with OE NGK plugs, Denso wires, fogged the engine twice with seafoam along with adding it to the oil before replacing it with Pennzoil Ultra synthetic oil (5w-40) and a K&N oil filter. And also seafoaming the fuel system for that extra precaution.

She's not a gem but I have some plans to build her a little bit. Nothing wild but 200-225hp with comparable torque would be optimal out of the EJ22 either N/A or Forced Induction.

I'm thinking WRX turbo with dual manifold heads, matching exhaust, boost controller, twin loop exhaust for a nice note without sacrificing too much compression and a set of Magnaflow Cats to contradict that, with most of the OE parts coming from salvage. It's all in theory but I'm questioning it's execution, and that's why I'm here. Any ideas/thoughts/opinions?

Congrats on your subie! And welcome to USMB!

For 200-225hp you would have to go pretty wild to stay NA, pickup a turbo motor and swap it if your goals are serious. I know the world record for an ej25 NA is around 300chp/235whp (zzyzz racing, TWE built block).

have to go forced induction to get those kind of numbers.

forced induction on NA is precarious, monitor EGT's like crazy and go really low boost.  i'd just plan on the engine blowing up and if you're really lucky maybe it won't.

kevin - username myxaplyx...i can never spell it right...he had a turbo set up on an NA 1997 OBS he took very good care of and raced it/timed it/probably did dyno sheets on it years ago.  i'd be looking for what he did if i were you.  search here or NASIOC probably for his old posts from 10 years ago.

reddevil did some fun work with forced induction on NA EJ's and blew up multiple engines in the process. read his thread for info and that's usually how it goes, blowing up and swapping lots of engines.

swap in a turbo engine, H6, or for a little lower power you can bolt your EJ22 heads to an EJ25 block.

I'm thinking with small numbers on the boost (5-7psi) the block should be able to sustain it without too many issues... along with doing a little top end work with the heads and pistons. Compression and vacuum is spot on. I also have a friend who's an engineering genius when it comes to engine building. He's built a Mazda 323 Hatch to run 12:1 compression and a plans to add a Mitsubishi Turbo with a scratch built header and piping.

There is quite a lot of information on sl-i.net and rs25.com about turboing an na engine. Like what parts you need and what you don't, search for threads about turboing the ej25d, which is electronically 99.8% identical to your ej22e.

the ej25d, which is electronically 99.8% identical to your ej22e.

it's even plug and play interchangeable with the EJ22 if you're wanting to increase displacement as well or simply bolt your Ej22 heads to an EJ25 block, also direct swap...though even higher compression i believe.

I MAY have access to an EJ20... I know a guy with a Subie collection from a while back and I know he has various engines on hand... what's the challenges with a swap of that nature? I'd like to get the weight distribution as close to 50/50 as I can so the smaller block would be nice. I'm thinkin of a period correct rally build in sportback form.

Eh. At least I'd be one step closer to rally spec. All the accessory parts can go to reduce weight in the front along with lightweight paneling and alloys. I'm just trying to get everything set in theory so I don't have many issues in the execution lol
