What Engine Do I Have

Featured Replies

I bought a 2.2 SOHC engine from a 99 Legacy, and am not sure which engine that I have, or what cars it can be swapped into. Can anyone help me figure this out?

the 99 ej22 sohc engine is a phase 2 engine and was used in the 99 legacy and the 99 - 00 impreza.

with some minor adjustments it can be used in the 00 - 03 legacy, outback, GT, forester, and impreza.

but it may be a little under powered for the outback .

The shape of the valve covers will determine the years it will work in.

This is a phase 1: http://smashtech.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/2012-02-18_14-07-37_856.jpg

90-99 Legacy

93-98 Impreza

Phase 2: http://m.ebay.com/itm/370766386818?nav=SEARCH#

2000-2001 Impreza

This engine will also fit in 99-2003 Forester, Legacy, Outback, and Impreza , possibly later years.

OK, I checked the valve covers and I definitely have a 2.2 Phase II engine from a 99 Legacy. I want to buy a 99 Impreza and replace the 2.2 H-4 Boxer currently in it (blown head gasket) with my 2.2. Is this a plug and go swap?

Should be direct swap might want to keep the IMP manifold with the IMP car.

So did the H-4 Boxer come in Phase I and II? Can you still tell the difference by the valve covers?
