May 10, 200421 yr When I got my OBW I was getting 24 MPG. I put on a cone shaped air filter and was getting about 17 MPG. I used ABS glue to put the original back on and now I get about 20 - 22 MPG. Since gas is about $2 a gallon...i'd like to improve my mileage. I used some fuel injector cleaner and etc. Shoud I check out some junkyards for a new MAF sensor thing? There are no gaps with the glue...so I don't know why my mileage has gone down. Would the sensor and pipe part off a 2.5 and 1.8l Impreza and Legacy engine work on the 2.2l? Anyone else have any ideas? If gas was half this price i'd think nothing of it...but it just seems to keep getting more expensive. Thanks.

May 10, 200421 yr Yah. I remeber 83cents a gallon when I had my big V8 chevy nova. I had to fill it up every week and I just didnt care. That car would bankrupt me now. Sorry for you Setright. Hybrid anyone?
May 11, 200421 yr Some advice I can give you is make sure your tires are properly inflated. Remove any unnecessary weight from your trunk, and when driving at highway speeds keep your windows closed. Oh yeah, and have your passengers walk!
May 11, 200421 yr Stop whining! Gas is more than 6 dollars a gallon over here :-( Gas here is about $1.30 per gallon. Gas in the UK is about $1.30 per gallon. Gas in Denmark is about $1.30 per gallon. Gas everywhere is about $1.30 per gallon. What you pay at the pump includes all the taxes levied to build roads, pay for social causes, and the like. Prices will continue to rise as China improves it's standard of living and the Middle East puts the squeeze on the world economy. Sadly, these will be remembered as the good old days.
May 11, 200421 yr Well, put in new filter and oil (castrol gtx) 2 weeks ago, and mpg has gone up 3-4mpg. Now running 28-30mpg 80%city/20%hiway drivin. 87 octane is up to 1.97 now, so every bit helps..

May 11, 200421 yr You'll be driving that Geo the rest of your life cause prices aren't going down ever again...at least substantially. SevenSisters points out the critical component: CHINA. Unless they somehow fall off the planet (hmmm?) worlwide demand for oil is only going to skyrocket. Bummer for us...just hope we don't go crazy socialist like Europe and start paying 5$ a gallon in taxes. BTW 22 isn't so bad just look around at all the poor saps in Expeditions and the like.
May 11, 200421 yr People said gas prices wouldn't go back down after the first war in Iraq, and you know what, they did. They may not ever go back to 80 cents a gallon, but I do not see them staying at the friggin $2.29 it is here for Regular at Chevron, just like it didn't stay at $2.09 last year, it went back down to $1.69 or so.
May 11, 200421 yr Author no, 22MPG isn't bad for city...but when it was all highway and I only got 22...thats bad. If I could average 25MPG...i'd be happy...or even 22 as an average would be ok.
May 12, 200421 yr You have a 2.2 in that correct? With a 2.2 and a 5-speed you should be close to 28 MPG on the highway. With a 2.5 and an automatic we got 27.7 MPG consistently with the A/C on and the car fully loaded on the highway. I have seen close to 30 MPG at times lately. I am extremely critical of most if not all aftermarket air intake systems. It isn't worth the reduced mileage, potential for increased engine wear, and potential for MAF damage IMHO. I would put the stock airbox back on it and start looking at things like plugs, wires, and O2 sensor to get that mileage where it should be.
May 12, 200421 yr Author The original box is back on...but its connected to the MAF with ABS glue. So...i'll either need a new MAF sensor or the part before the sensor the bolts to the box.

May 12, 200421 yr Yep. That was driving 55MPH roads at about 60MPH. Synthetic lubricants throughout. OEM everything. Yokohama Avid Touring tires at 35 PSI front, 34 PSI rear. ~156K miles. My wife typically averages 25 MPG with 50/50 mixed driving.
May 12, 200421 yr Just finished a 2500 mile trip in '90 Legacy AWD Auto. My averages for each gas up are as follows: 30.26 30.17 28.65 29.19 31.2 35.15 26.35 28.2 Overall average if I throw out the hi and low comes to 29.61. This is mostly interstate driving at speeds ranging from 75-85. I'm quite happy since I expected 25-26 mpg at those high speeds. I just wonder where the 35.15 came from. I checked the numbers and all look good. I must have had one heck of a tail wind. -cl
