Gearing

Featured Replies

Do all Turbo EA82's have 3.70 gearing at both ends?  The non-turbo ones have 3.90 ratios, the ones I've seen anyway.

I just bought a 5 speed at the junkyard, from a turbo motor car, my thinking is that the turbos engine was such a POS that the tranny would have less miles on than most.  I have a couple of 3.90 diffs, and car reach out and get a 3.70, that's not an issue, but it would be nice to be able to tell from some marking on the case just exactly what the diff ratio is..

Anybody?

Hi This is Jerry, count the splines on the stub axle if it has 25 splines then it's a 3.70 gears if it has 23 splines it's a 3.90 gears. Thanks Jerry

Yep.  AND, the turbo axle is larger diameter stub, so "new" front axles required.  So, will require new, larger wheel bearings?

aside from the different spline count everything else is the same. some of the axles are thicker but that really has no effect.

i had a turbo car with a non turbo trans, everything was a direct swap.

just make sure you have the right ratio rear diff

why would you want a low mileage trans? the dual range i had in my turbo wag had over 400k before it locked up. and i would beat it mercilessly. im talking 6k clutch dumps in 4 low on pavement,

Mine has 428k, the bearings howl and there is both brass and steel in the tranny oil.  I reckon (SWAG) that something in there is breaking up.

(Mine's a 5-spd manny tran)
