A little confused as my passenger side cam gear has many paint markings. Hopefully I'm able to link to photo bucket from my phone. Please let me know if things look good before I button things up.

Sorry, looks like you can click the photo bucket links. I just want to make sure I'm in good shape before I finish up. Weird that I did a WRX belt a year ago with no questions and now I'm stuck on a much easier job, partly based on the multiple paint makings and no notched factory marks on the cam gears.

Forget the multiple paint marks!  Look for the little hash marks cast in the outer rim of the cam sprockets.

Hard to tell for sure, but on the left (driver's side) sprocket it looks like the hash mark might be in the pink paint.

On the right (passenger's side) looks like it's in the gray paint.  Where's your right side rear timing belt cover?  Would help you if you had the notch to line up with.

The crank sprocket appears to be lined up correctly.

Yep, I agree with Olink. Driver's side hash mark looks like it's under the pink paint, passenger side looks like it's under the grey. You can confirm that by running a screwdriver or your fingernail or something over the surface and feel for the mark.

IIRC there isn't an inner timing cover on the passenger side of that motor. The outer cover just mates up to the head. You're supposed to line the mark on the cam gear up with the link between the head and the cam retainer (or whatever it's called). There should be a line where the two mate.

Passenger side is WAY off. The hash mark is between the Pink and white paint marks. Like it up with the seam in the head so the mark points straight up.

Drivers side looks OK but you need to put a wrench on it and turn it counter clockwise a hair to make sure ALL of the slack is out of the belt along the bottom. The belt should be tight along the bottom stretch. If there is any looseness there the driver side cam will be pulled out of place when you pull the tensioner pin.

I found that the drivers cam generally will be a half tooth off of the mark in the cover. It's best to have the mark on the sprocket towards the drivers side of the mark in the cover.

I feel dumb. I couldn't see the notches and didn't think about running a small screwdriver around the gear. Passenger side one is under the white mark between the red and grey ones. Drivers side is on point right now. My timing cover only has marks above the crank pulley. You're also saying I should have the driver side lined up just to the right (closer to the fender) of where it is?

I really appreciate all the help.

Yes. Just remove the belt and turn the cam back the 3-4 teeth it needs. It doesn't need to be spun all the way around.

The timing mark for the drivers side is the small notch cut out in the rear cover just above the sprocket. When you get the belt installed, if you find that the mark on drivers sprocket is not quite lined up, make sure its towards the drivers side of the notch (towards the fender).
