Hi, forum and loyale newb

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Newbie to forum here, not new to subaru :)

I just purchased 1991 loyale wagon, with on demand 4WD. SPFI, It has 220k on it. I have been doing LOTS of searching, studying and wrenching on the beast getting it ready for emmisions test so i can title it in my name. It was purchased from a friend so i have time to get the paperwork done :).

I have a few questions i cant find, searched hi and low, i have a chiltons that came with the car also found pdf's of the FSM for the engine, tuneup and such. Have been reading the crap out of both for a few weeks and found this great forum. Big suby fan, 4th one.

Here is what I have done so far:

New plugs(ngk)

New wires(ngk)

New cap and rotor

New air filter, fuel filter

New muffler

New o2 sensor, bosche

Replaced all vac lines

Changed oil and filter

Drained coolant and filled with new, gunk came out of drain... Prob should pull and check. Read something about 2 row radiators? Not sure how to check.

New thermostat/gasket...napa, i read oem is best so maybe should invest?

Cleaned out pcv...read should get a new one.

I fixed the purge solenoid code, no engine light now. I do get 24 in memory check, but the iac seems to work as it should.. Need to clear and see if it comes back.

Some things i would love help with :)

In setting timing, connected green test conn

I set it to 20 but its abit jumpy. The idle is a just a little lumpy also, much better than it was just not perfect smooth. If i rev it up a bit, its smooth. Not knowing anyone with similar engine/car im not sure what to expect.

I connected a vac gauge and it vibrates between 15 and 17 or so. I connected it in line where the line goes from the manifold to reserve tank. Hope thats ok. I did notice a few intake bolts were not tightened all the way. Will be getting OEM gaskets for intake and tbi.

The other thing is the AC works great but the idle goes up, then down below idle. If i disconnect the pulser it shuts off the compressor, thats should mean it detects ac on i think. Also i read the second radiator fan should kick on and it does not. Searching more on that but no real luck so far. My docs does not have the ac section.

Ahhh, also when i start it cold, i see small coolant droplets on one of the driver side exhaust manifole bolts. I think i see some around the pipe also but it evaporates and dont see anything anywhere. I did see a quick puff of white smoke when i started it once only.

I hope post is not too long, i know i threw out alot... this seems to be a great forum and looks like many knowledgable people. Happy to be a menber and contribute as i learn.

Thanks all in advance!! Any help would be awesome.

Ooops, guess too much info...babbling :)

Just passed emissions test. Woohoo

I am curiouse about the timing, does it typically jump a little or should it be rock solid on 20?

Welcome, and yep that's a lot to absorb.  But that's Okay.  It does help to focus on a specific issue so we can offer suggestions.  Pics are always a plus.

As far as I know, timing should be steady.

Thanks for the welcome! Ya, after i posted i looked at it and well, guess i thought the more info the better but learned my lesson...too much and all over the place is not good. I am trying to find the spec on how much rotational play is ok for dist. I do have a little, maybe 1/16 or a little more. I think i still have vac leaks also. Working on finding them. Will post some pics of the beast, need to find a name for it now. Some pretty good ones on here.
