early vs late ej22

My 1990 legacy ej22 has suffered a blown head gasket at 350k miles. I have a later (1996?) ej22 motor in the garage. I can see they are not identical and am wondering what is needed to swap motors. This is a back up car for me and I'd like to do the swap for as cheaply as possible.

there are 2 issues.

the 96 has single port exhaust on the heads,

so you would need the matching exhaust y-pipe.

 

 

the other issue, the 96 is obd2, the 90 is obd1.

but that can be corrected by using the 90 intake manifold on you 96 engine.

easy peasy.

if the 96 has EGR on the intake manifold, (was pulled from an auto trans car)

you will have to plug the hole in the head where the EGR pipe mated.

 

or just swap the wire harness and ?throttle body? from the 90 on to the 96 intake.

 

 

but if the 96 does not have EGR, it was from a manual trans car,

just use the 90 intake on the 96 engine.

It came out of an auto car so I'll have to plug the egr port and swap the intake/harness.

I ran out to the garage and looked at the exhaust ports. It's dual port. Maybe I have the year wrong? 

 

It came out of a second gen legacy auto. The wiring harness connector on the passenger rear side of the motor is completely different than what is in my car. So I thought that is was an OBD2 car. Any ideas what I'm looking at? I can post pics if it will help

 

 

I guess the good news is that I'll should only have to swap the intake manifold/harness. 

ok, so it is a 95 ej22,

that is better.

you do not need the y-pipe.

 

the easy solution is to swap the 90 intake onto the 96 engine ,

and plug the hole in the rear of the driver side head.

i don't know the thread size but i do remember reading that it is not weird.

I've seen a couple dual port 96s, so it may very well be a 96 engine.

 

Now for the egr hole in the head, run down to advance auto and pick up an m16x1.5 oil drain plug. The one I ended up getting needed to have the magnetic end ground down to get fully seated to the head.
