August 21, 201411 yr So I'm finally going to get around to dropping my EJ set up in my XT GL10. NA EJ22 with a turbo add-on, AWIC, oil cooler and boost controller. As I don't want to be eating up clutches, I was waiting to get a Spec 3 for it,, but I read a suggestion for using the XT6 clutch and not cutting the flywheel down for extra clamping force. Has anyone actually done this?
August 21, 201411 yr Make sure it actually IS an xt6 clutch, and I believe you got it backwards, you would want to grind it down, to .816 I think, for more clamping force. I just put an ej22 in my wagon and ground the flywheel and used a standard 4wd ea82 clutch, got about 3000 miles on it and no issues.
August 21, 201411 yr Author Yeah, I couldn't remember exactly which way it was supposed to go except that the XT6 pressure plate has more clamping force on it's own but you have to do something to the EA82 flywheel to make it work and gain more clamping force.
August 22, 201411 yr You have a couple of options. You can get the XT6 flywheel modified to fit the EJ. It is also lighter then the EA82 flywheel, or... Have the EA82 flywheel cut to the XT6 specs. There's a lip down where the clutch disc touches the flywheel and it has to be ground flat. It's not very big from what I can remember.
August 22, 201411 yr Author Thanks Caboobaroo.I remembered that one, but someone posted something about cutting extra off the pressure plate mounting ridge to increase clamping force so I was curious if it had actually been done. I have both flywheels, but the EA82 was the one I had Scott mill out. Hindsight is 20/20. lol
August 22, 201411 yr Grind EA82 flywheel step to .815 to increase clamp force. This is the spec for the XT6 flywheel should already be at.....so using the xt6 clutch with it should be fine. (most companies only make one clutch set for EA82 4wd/XT6 anyhow) I've taken an EA82 flywheel to .810 step for my lifted, EJ22 rig. and it works great still.
August 23, 201411 yr X2 on what Gloyale said. I'm turning 31's with an EJ22 with a XT6 spec ground flywheel and a normal 4wd ea82 gl clutch and I don't have any slippage issues at all. Even turbo'd, I think you'll be fine...my clutch grabs hard! Josh
August 23, 201411 yr Author Excellent. Yes, I've seen your rig a few times on my trips to Shoreline. If it's holding that, I'll be fine.
September 19, 201411 yr Greetings from Issaquah, WA. I may be in the wrong place with my question, so point me to the correct one if needed. I have been on the fence about putting an EJ-22 in my '83 BRAT, but the old EA-81 is getting tired. I have finally decided to go ahead with the project, and now have a complete EJ-22 and harness. I will be using the original D/R 4-speed transmission, and I understand i will need an adapter plate. I have read many threads on the subject, but I seem to be confused about one aspect of the swap. I do not plan to do much 'wheeling'; but do want to be able to keep up with traffic in the mountains without having to have the 'Go-pedal' all the way to the floor constantly. I have a question about the clutch. Everyone seem to be swapping/modifying flywheels. Why can't I just use the original EJ-22 flywheel and cover, with an appropriate clutch disk to match the spline cound for the original D/R tranny? What am I missing in all the reading? Second question...where do i get the adapter plate, if I decide not to fab it myself? I saw one sorce listed, but they apparently only make cycle covers now. Thanks for your help. Rod in Issaquah
September 19, 201411 yr Author The flywheel is the wrong size to work with the starter, and, IIRC there is no disc with the correct spline count that will fit the EJ flywheel.
