October 15, 201411 yr My 98 Legacy wagon has an annoying tailgate rattle that I've been trying to fix for months. Yesterday I noticed that the two spring loaded rubber parts in the door opening do not make contact with the tailgate when it's closed. There is a hole on each side of the tailgate right where I'd expect the rubber pieces to make contact but there is a gap that I think may be causing my rattle. I'm wondering if there is a missing clip or something that fits into the hole? I knew this would be a difficult post to follow so I've provided pictures. Am I missing pieces?
October 17, 201411 yr There may be some missing rubber bumpers. Hopefully someone with a 2nd gen Legacy can look at their Legacy and comment.
October 17, 201411 yr Not sure from the description or images but could you split a small length of thin rubber hose and wrap it around the latch area in in the center of the hatch? Is it the actual door that is rattling? Edited October 17, 201411 yr by brus brother
October 17, 201411 yr Author Thanks for the replies, I thought this thread was dead. I cant say for sure where the rattle is coming from but I'll try to simplify my question... Picture 2 is the driver side end of the tailgate, just about dead center of the picture there is a hole, does anything go into the hole?

October 18, 201411 yr Adjust the bottom frame hook in a bit. Take off the middle plastic cover that goes over the hook. Loosen the two 12mm bolts that secure the hook Take a block of wood put it against the outside of the hook and hit the 2x4 with a hammer (hard) You will be able to move the hook in about a 1/4" Tighten the bolts Put it back together Enjoy no rattle
