Oscillating steering wheel 2003 outback

Featured Replies

I have 2003 outback wagon 2.5 with about 170,000 on it.  The steering wheel slowly oscillates back and
forth at slow speeds, 25 and under and stops at speeds higher than that.  There is also a cv joint knocking, sounds
like inner passenger side to me.  Could
these two things be related or is the oscillation a separate issue?

Also I have replaced axle shafts on a number of outbacks up
through 1999 model year.  Is the 2003 pretty
much the same procedure or will it be different in some way?

Sure could be one and the same.  Good visual inspection is the place to start

Tire Pressure

Tire Tread

Lug Nuts and Wheel

Brake Rotor

Brake Caliper and Pads

Axle

R&R if the axle the same, recommend Subaru parts

03 will have the same process for axle change.

The wheel wobble could be an axle issue, but check tread wear on the tires for any low spots.

Also grab the wheel at opposite sides and top and bottom and try to rock it back / forth and in/out to check for any loose movement.

i would think tires first.

how old are they and condition?

but given a known issue it's good to start there.

www.car-part.com and look for OEM Subaru used axles - green inner cups.
