HELP! 2 wire distributor w/vacuum advance EA82

Featured Replies

I have an 85 GL 10 which started overheating bad late last year.Pulled the engine to find after 262,000

miles, I had managed to crack the block at the center head bolt....I finally found a 57000 mile EA 82 from an 89 DL which looked REAL Clean. Now I am looking at it's four wire disty and from what I can tell I have no choice but to use my old disty in this engine. So I took my old disty out and began cleaning/inspecting it. The counter balances have rubbed the side of it pretty bad and the vacuum advance was stuck bad.I've got the advance moving again, but the diaphram still leaks some which will cause trouble I'm sure..Any Ideas on best resolution to the problem? Will these distys' interchange ?

does anyone have a spare for parts? The springs in it are shot also....Any help is Greatly appreciated..Btw I think it is the Hitachi disty..its black with snap clips for the cap..

Is your GL-10 2wd or 4wd?

If 4wd you can use any 2 wire subaru EA82 disty........from any carbed model

IF yours is 2wd....you have the early Flapper MAF style MPFI.  Still can use the 2 wire carb disty but may have different advance curve.

Thanks for the quick response!! It is four wheel drive, carbed original hitachi carb ,newly rebuilt.

The dizzy will have a part number in its casing - that will be your best steer towards a replacement 22100AA390 was a common dizzy about this age - maybe just for Oz though ....Subaru did sell new vac cans for these old things

My part book for 85 gives me 22100 AA081 or 082

Just a note to all. I contacted Philbin Group, real nice people,I just dont have the extra cash to get the disty rebuilt right now.

So since I am a diy kind of person, I rebuilt the vacuum advance myself... took about forty minutes,I used rubber roofing for the diaphragm and was able to tap the piston shaft for a 24 tpi machine screw, it worked perfectly!!! Thanks for all the advice!!

If thats EPDM (rubber roofing material) you used, just the vapors of fuel will cause it to deteriorate. That stuff doesnt like petroleum distillates whatsoever.

UMM oops! Guess I should have done just a tad more research............maybe since it is VACUUM operated

very few fumes will get to it?It looks like I may end up replacing the disty anyway..that was a last ditch effort............

I dont think itd get any fumes, while its running. But when its off, the fumes will get to it. Im sure your fix works, and its a great idea for when you're in a pinch. And thought the EPDM will deteriorate, it would most likely take months at least for it to shoot craps. (Since itd be vapors, not liquid)
