November 10, 201411 yr 86 Brat,4 speed EA81. Why does my passenger side, inner CV boot keep vacuuming down and then throwing the geease out? What can I do to stop this process?
November 10, 201411 yr I would let some air in. Try to use a tiny screw driver of something to let some air in. If it does not work you will have to loosen the band. Good luck, Sam
November 10, 201411 yr That is strange. When I re-boot, I always make sure to use a small screwdriver to let some air in before I band it. But you say yours 'keep' doing it? If the boots suck in (ie., air tight), then how does the grease get out?
November 11, 201411 yr Author Actually this the second time for doing it. First time it came from the factory (World Pack) CarQuest] and I replaced my failing one. So I tore the inner band off and zip tied it. Then it has done it again after being zip tied.
November 11, 201411 yr Author I thinking about rezipping and putting in a straw from a WD40 can under the boot. Any foreseeable problems with this avenue?
November 11, 201411 yr You need real clamps. The zipties are letting air out when it warms and expands.....then it seals well enough under vacuum as it cools down. You need to squeeze most of the air out with the joint compressed to about 2/3 in.........then clamp it tightly with a proper CV clamp The boot should be slightly "sucked in" when cold....the air and grease inside expand when hot. Possible you have too much grease in there too.
November 11, 201411 yr Author It started this process with a real clamp, and the drivers side is done the same way no problems. I guess this is a justified new tool purchase for a cv clamp tool.
November 11, 201411 yr Author Okay, done with the appropriate band and tool. We'll see how long it stays right.
