I went to get a key copy for my 2002 forester, and the copies don't work, is they something more then a key blank?  is it a special thing with a chip  ?

Won't work as in won't start the car? The key turns the lock right?

No chip in a 2002 as far as I know.  Subaru can cut a new one off the VIN.

I had that problem with a key from Lowes. I had to modify it a bit because the crappy machine they use didn't cut it right.

 

I get all my keys from a local locksmith now and they always work perfect.
