it all depends on the final drive ratios.

if neither car has the ej25,

and both cars have the same trans, auto vs. manual,

you should be able to swap the rear diff.

but, why?

what is wrong with the 99 rear diff.

and finally, i am completely unaware that they use different axles.

to the best of my knowledge,

the legacy and the impreza have always used the same axles, 95+. (excluding high end imprezas like the WRX.)

See my "Rear Banging" entry. I think it is probably an axle circlip that came loose to foul the ring gear. I'm going to look w magnet through filler Friday.  I mostly wrench motorcycles but have become better acquainted w my Leg. after this issue arouse. I have a line on Imp. diff.&axles locally but he claims he has 22 spliners? That's why I thought mix & match might be needed. PS I just rechecked RockAuto and they show a 22 spline axle for automaiic Imps '93-'00. I cannot understand such a difference but I'll be getting the axles too,

Make sure the gear ratios are the same. Aside from that the only reason they would have a different spline count on the axles is if the impreza is a turbo car
