Ej22 swap

Featured Replies

So i have a 91 legacy wagon that is rotted around the ej22 and is not even close to roadworthy. I am looking to get a really cheap 95 impreza with a blown motor and want to do the swap to limp me until i get the money for a 2.0 turbo. I have a 02 outback with the 3.0 and that was a mistake because of the rarity for parts. And i just want to sell it. Would the swap be an easy bolt in setup or would i need to transfer alot of harness and running gear from the wagon

Pretty easy swap, just take the 95 2.2 intake manifold, complete with the harness and bolt it onto the 91.  The only issue may be the EGR if the 95 has one.  There's a work around for the EGR is you need it.

Imdew, same process for a 1.8? Just got a reply from the seller and said its a 1.8 some mild research says basically, yes

Same deal for the 1.8.

Bolt the Impreza manifold onto your 2.2 long block. You might have to swap cam and crank sensors and the temp sensor from the 1.8 onto the 2.2, but those are easy.

While the engine is out you can pop some Delta torque grind cams into your 2.2 and get a little extra oomph. If the 1.8 has roller rockers you can swap those onto the 2.2 and use roller cams to free up a few more hp as well.

Alright, thanks man, idk about the cams because the motor has 300k but it was still strong enough for me to destroy the rearend of the car but as i said it will only be in the car for like a year and maybe get somethin built after i save my pennies and sell my current car haha, im also building something else old school murican.

EZ30 (3.0 in the outback) is one of the best engines subaru has ever made.

What parts have you had trouble finding?  The only thing they ever need is Serpentine belt tensioner/idler bearings (same part. a $12, 6203 bearing either RS or ZZ will work fine. IIRC)

EGR will be the only hiccup putting 2.2 into the Impreza.  Still will run fine but will throw a CEL.  Unless you use the "bypass" trick that's been done by some here.  I think it involes routing the EGR pipe from the Mani over to a "T" into the IAC line.  Search the USRM

cam and crank sprockets should not be an issue.

i don't think the 95 ej18 has a knock sensor,

i don't know how that relates.

Well in the ez30 the power steering pump went and there was none in the country so i ordered from europe and idk if the pump is bad or the rack was but it is continually bleeding and sounds bad and steers stiff. I cant find any aftermarket parts. Plus they're all auto and the outback is heavy so i think i would rather rake the easier route and slowly build a 4cyl. Also bc its 1,000 pounds lighter, so think i would rather go that way

I Found about 10 different options for new or Reman PS pumps with a quick search.  Plus wrecking yards got em too.

I understand wanting a lighter car with a Manual.  However it would be pretty easy to put a manual behind the EZ30.  That will wake that beast up fo sure.

But just trying to be clear for others reading this.  The EZ30 has a stellar performance record in my book.  Low maintainence with no timing belt and very few HG problems.    Much more reliable HP than a turbo motor.

Yes, i am not saying that the performance isnt good, 210k and its happy in the high rpms and no signs of engine failure except that pump, i webt to a few places that said they could get it then when i showed up it was either on back order or overseas and the dealer said 800 w/o labor. But if i was to consider the 5spd what trans would it be and what car could i find all the gear? But anyway you look at it its still a 3800# car
