Mileage on new Outback

Featured Replies

My wife and I got our 2015 Outback the end of December and love it. The vehicle does everything well so far and we are following the manuals recommendation on break-in for the initial 1000 miles. The one thing I am noticing though is the MPG and I am not sure whether to be concerned or not. The MPG is averaging around 20 MPG driving easy city miles. Since the stated figures are 25/33, is the reduced MPG due to new vehicle conditions?

I have yet to see a vehicle get what the window sticker says.

I wouldn't worry too much.  Remember that this is winter, we're on winter gas, and you have a new engine.  When my Mate was driving the Impreza to his job, it was showing 12 mpg on the computer.  It's crawling back up now that I'm back in the car as it is now at least getting the chance to warm up a bit before I pull in to work.

My 2014 outback got 26 mph during the summer and 20mpg now during the winter in Wisconsin [even lower when the high was 0 degF].  My driving is intercity, short trips.

"city driving" is highly variable - much depends what you mean by that.  if it's "all city driving" or even most, then that's likely the issue.

take it on an average distance trip at some point and take note what you get.
