  1. I'd get it replaced post haste. Interference engine. Jump a tooth and you're pulling heads and rebuilding them. It sounds to me like a good time to get in there and replace cam seals, belt, tensioner, idler pullies and anything else that has a bearing or seal attached to it.
  2. Mine is newer and does "downshift" to help maintain speed. I can watch the revs pick up when the speed increases approximately 5 mph over set speed on a downhill grade. I do not have eyesight.
  3. Yes this is normal. It is only recently that vehicles have begun to incorporate grade logic and have begun using engine braking to maintain set speed on the cruise. Your vehicle still requires you pay attention to your speed in hilly conditions.
  4. Primarily flat. it's a bit hilly between Williston and Minot. Those numbers though, did include a pretty strong tailwind. My numbers were in the upper 30's coming back.
  5. I took another road trip in Scooby last weekend. My slow as you go driving technique was very nicely augmented by a stiff tailwind. I was pleased to see this. Drive was Williston, ND to Grand Forks ND. Speed was 55 mph and a cool cloudy day making A/C not needed. I had a strong tailwind so I do know that this is not typical even with my driving style. It's still fun to see though. I love this car.
  6. Speed was 55 mph. The vast majority if the time when I travel, I keep my speeds down. I've found that the higher speeds do not gain the amount of time that one would think. Much of the gains are lost by having to stop more often for fuel, and to simply get out of the car and take breaks due to the fact that it tends to wear you out faster. I have noted time and time again, having the very same vehicles passing me over and over again during the day as they eat up their gains in more frequent stops. Being slower means lower operating temperatures for the tires, allowing them to last longer, reduced stresses on vehicle components, also increasing their lifespans, and reducing those maintenance and repair costs.
  7. 2015 Subaru Impreza 2.0 base model with the CVT. I've also noticed that as the engine has been breaking in (7500 miles on it now) a bit more of that Subaru sound has been sneaking back into the engine note.
  8. Nope, that's steady state level ground travel, if anything it's a slight increase in elevation between Portage and Fargo. It was higher at one point, but the weather had started to turn with the winds picking up and turning into a headwind as I was nearing Fargo.
  9. For anyone who says that Subies have a fuel mileage penalty for AWD, I beg to differ. Month: May Temps: 60's warming to about 80 before clouding up and cooling back down. Speed: 55 mph set by cruise control Area, Portage, WI, to Fargo, ND.
  10. Low rolling resistance tires, heavier car. It's annoying, but not unusual. I had a first gen Prius that did this, and it was common with them as well. Same for a 96 Dodge Ram 1500 I had with Goodyear tires. Pretty much anything in the aftermarket should fix the issue. Keep in mind the weight rating for the tire and the weight of the car.
  11. Sounds like a trip to the stealership for warranty work is in order. Detonation is not normal for any engine, and can result in damaged pistons. I have no delay in my Impreza, which has the same engine as your XV.
  12. Awesome rescue. I want a Brat. Enjoy the resurrection.
  13. In town is running about 25 - 27 mpg, and I've seen as high as 43 on the highway. 2015 Impreza with the NA 2.0/CVT. I must also add that I keep to a max speed of 55 on the higway, and utitlize every safe means possible to reduce fuel consumption when I drive.
  14. Since this is an engine and tranny swap, can the parts lists be relied upon? With that, I'd personally get 'em rebuilt and put 'em back on just to avoid any possible parts number issues. That said, I'm not up on what went into what for what year, so..........
  15. And mine also has the light lit. I despise these stupid sensors. I'm a few hundred miles from my first service, so mine will get reset or whatever it is they need to do at service time. *grumps*
  16. Those sensors are the bane of everyone's existence, regardless of make or model. As has been mentioned, something needs to likely be reset. If not, a sensor may be going bad, causing the light. Either way, it'll be covered under warranty.
  17. I would try to insist that these are now deemed "classic" cars, and cannot be totaled, and they must fix it. A long shot, but hey, in my state my $500 rusty Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera is "valued" at $6k for taxation purposes, and is decreed a "classic" car for valuing the annual registration tax. Too bad to see another one of these increasingly rare old Subies sitting there terminally injured.
  18. I have no idea. I'm surprised to see no overdrive, and with a 4.13 final, they had to be fairly revvy on the highway.
  19. Greetings from your neighbor to the east. I reside in the bakken mess known as Williston ND.
  20. I'd want to keep that one as it is as a survior. NIce one.
  21. I'm not sure what the difference is besides some trim and a lift compared to the Impreza. I don't find power to be an issue with my Impreza at all.
  22. This is definitely looking like the mechanic put the wrong fluid down the wrong hole. As others have said, I'd get another oil change done very soon to insure all of the contaminated stuff is out of the engine. Keep an eye on the coolant level - just in case - and get the car out on a good drive to get things circulated and cleaned up. Then do another oil change to know that every last bit of contamination is out of that engine. Hopefully you dodged a bullet on this one, and this mechanic didn't ruin your engine. Otherwise, I'd be on their case to pay for the swap.
  23. THE cheapest way to improve gas mileage is to simply slow down. It's free. It won't help power any, but it's still free.
  24. Get the new cats in first, then see what you get. If they're rattling, they are no longer doing their job. How far out of spec are the readings on your test?
