January 27, 201511 yr Hello, I remember as a kid my uncle's early seventies green Subaru wagon. I learned to drive a manual transmission using my Dad's 1979 GL 4x4 Wagon and I owned a 1983 GL-10 4x4 Wagon before foolishly selling it. Living in Colorado, I have always thought Subarus were great for the weather here and I hope to own another sometime. I think they are neat cars and would like to own an Outback wagon but from what I have gathered from the internet, the late '90s early 2000's models that would be in my price range seem to have a significant engine reliability problem (head gaskets). January 27, 201511 yr Welcome. The older Outbacks (I had a '97) and Foresters are great. You just need to know what to look for. Try to find one that has had the head gasket work done and you should be ok. j.
January 28, 201511 yr It's true I had a 99' outback with a full rebuild including head gaskets, timing belt components etc and that car was incredible, and was surprisingly quick. Welcome aboard here as well, where in Colorado do you call home?
January 28, 201511 yr Author Thanks, I will check the forums to see what I can learn about the older Outbacks and what to look for in a used one. I am in Colorado Springs. See lots of Subarus around here, unfortunately not many of the 80's models seem to be on the road here anymore.
January 28, 201511 yr There's some 80's subarus on craiglist right now. Theres an 87 brat in the springs for sale. Anyways Welcome. I keep my 86 Brat on the road as a restore and drive it back and forth to Fort Collins for school.
