02 wrx binding and rear wheel skipping

Featured Replies

i was driving up a hill and hear banging coming from the back of the car, i pull over and have a look under the car to see if any oil or grease is coming out of the rear or centre diff aswell as the cv's, nothing, so i start driving it, while going slowly and turning right at full lock, the right wheel is skipping until i start to go faster, then when turning left, the car is jolting backwards and forwards, no skipping from the wheels at the back, it is binding if trying to reverse and turn aswell, so i have to give it more accelerator and then it starts going backwards, when driving forwards and turning at a decent speed, it does not do it. Lifted wheels, in neutral and no hand brake on, rears turn much slower than fronts, I didn't turn car on just rolled the wheels,I don't own 4 jack stands so I did the fronts, they moved pretty easily, the backs were really hard to move

does the car seem to behave OK until warmed-up a little? Seems like severely damaged center diff in the 5spd stick. . They are often worse when warm/hot. jerkiness when turning tight on dry pavement is almost always torque bind.

does the car have a history of operation with different sized tires? trans or rear differential swap?

No history of anything like that, I haven't driven it on cold with this problem, it happened last night (Australian)
