83 BRAT GL POssible Carb Issue

Featured Replies

Here's what I hope will be a relatively straight forward question... I recently purchased an 83 BRAT for a daily driver, and as a more utilitarian vehicle than my "toy" car. I haven't dealt with carbs much, so I have a couple of small concerns. Since I purchased it, the BRAT has died unless I keep the RPMs up. I expect that sort of problem in the morning when I first start it, and I thought it would change after the weather warmed up a little. It hasn't... I tried adjusting the idle, and npw it just idles higher when it is working correctly, otherwise the RPMs fall until the engine dies. It isn't usually a big problem, but in traffic it can be awfully inconvenient. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could try to correct this problem?

You should first check for vacuum leaks. Spray around with carb cleaner and see if you can find any. If that checks out, then I'm afraid it's time for a carb rebuild. The Hitachi's can be tempermental unless carefully rebuilt. Once properly rebuilt, they usually go a long time before needing anything else. You can also swap over to a Weber 32/36 DGV. Do a search on the board for more info on that, as it has been covered more times than I care to count.
