Trying to do the brakes on my 88 gl wagon, the left front caliper won't spin back in and and I can't afford a new one, anyone have any ideas?

Get a good used one.

check the hill holder mechanism under the master cylinder if you have a manual trans.  it locks the 2 left brakes when the clutch is down. when the return spring breaks they stay locked.  Look up 'Hill Holder'

Try it with the E-brake cable disconnected at the caliper.
