1999 subaru legacy window problem

I'm a new owner of a 1999 subaru legacy. Having problems with driver side window not going down. Is this a fuse or another problem? Could not find a fuse for the window.

On my 94 legacy they all quit.  The relay and all wiring was under the carpet , under the driver seat...   had to remove the seat to see anything.   With only one window effected i would test power at the switch and look for problems at that door first.

There is a fuse but it will not affect operation of just one window.

Problem is either the switch or the motor, or wiring between the two. Pull the door panel off and see if you have power getting to the motor when you move the switch.

 

Its common for the contacts in the switch to corrode. Some can be disassembled and cleaned and re-greased with di-electric grease and work fine again.

 

If the switch contacts are corroded you'll have power on both wires at the same time, indicating a bad ground contact. Or have no power on either wire, which would be a bad power contact in the switch.

If Both wires change between 12v and ground when you flip the switch back and forth, problem is probably the motor.

FairTax -- Is the fuse for all the windows in-line? I vaguely remember reading that somewhere. I checked the fuses in the holder and all were fine. I just bought a '97 and all the windows do not work and am getting ready to trouble-shoot it as well.

I spent hours on my 94 looking under the dash for power wires to the windows. If you have no luck finding the your problem under the dash, try removing your driver seat and look under your carpet. Mine had a corroded main power wire from all the moisture that gets held under the carpet on the drivers side.    

Is the trouble only with the driver's window? Do the other door windows go up and down properly? If the other windows work okay, then it is not a fuse or relay. The problem would most likely be with the window motor, or the switch.

 

The switches are known to go bad, as this happened with my 98 OBW. I found a replacement switch in a wrecking yard to fix my problem. Cost about $15. New one from a dealer is about $150.
