1999 forester engine swap question

Featured Replies

I was thinking of doing a 2.2 swap into the '99 forester but i just acquired a crashed 1999 legacy w/ 93k on the motor and some work already done to it. the numbers look close:

legacy: XFJXVO2.5DCD

forester: XFJXVO2.5HEG

is this a direct swap?

thank you in advance

gregg

No, your 99 Forester has a single over head cam, the 99 Legacy has a double over head cam motor. Both motors are 2.5 displacement, but have different computer control management systems, so can't be interchanged.

There may be some "work arounds" to piece something together, but not a direct swapl

Those are emission family ID numbers. That only tells you the type of emission equipment on the car. (O2 Sensor type, evap system design, Cat design)

As long as both engines are SOHC 2.5 they'll swap fine.

If the legacy has the DOHC 2.5, no way it'll work.
