EA81 With 5spd D/R - Which Axles?

I tried to search for this and saw a bunch of conflicting info.

 

Some people say EA81 and EA82 cars use the same axles. Some say they don't. I know there are different spline counts for some cars and differences between FWD and 4WD as well. Can someone who has a 5 speed dual range transmission swapped into their gen2 car help me out? I'm not looking for another thread full of speculations. Which CV axles do I use? I have one clicking like crazy on my BRAT and I need to swap it out, but since the trans swap was done before I bought the car, I don't know which axles it takes.

 

I could also get just an outer joint, so if any axles are different enough not to work, but have the same outer DOJ, I could get one of those.

You want the stock EA81 23-spline axle if you have the standard D/R 5spd from the EA82 (also is 23-spline).   The turbo models had 25-spline.

If your current axle has the OEM green colored doj/cvj caps, you would be better off cleaning them and rebooting with fresh CV grease.   Click Click ain't so bad... can be fixed.

what about a little speculation ?

 

no one in here can tell you what spline count you have in your car due to the chances the donor box came from either a 25 spline or a 23 spline model.

 

Greater chance is that it is going to be same as the 4 speeder EA81 4WD box had initially - 23 spline, BUT if someone found a 25 spline and managed to find and fit correct DOJs - they may have wanted a stronger set of stubs ?? Money is stil on you finding 23 spline.

 

What you can do to help yourself is arm self with a pin punch to knock out the pin on the inner DOJ, far enough through to allow you to slip the DOJ back away from transmission to reveal the splines. mark one, count the rest as it turns with some human assistance.

 

I have a 5 speed conversion in my Brumby - I did it. I also been trying to nut out the 25 spline DOJ that has 23 spline inner to suit the EA81 axle shaft itself without wasting money on stuff. gave up for a while .....I have one of those DOJ just described, wanted to know a new reliable source for another and spares in future

Everything is definitely 23 spline on my car. So any 23 spline EA81 front axle it is. The plan is to inspect and rebuild if it isn't too worn. I just wanted to know which to get if it comes to the worst case scenario.

 

I know the aftermarket axles are crap, so I'm going to try to get some rebuildable oem axles from a JY if possible. I might buy and rebuild one just to keep on the shelf as a spare either way.

Multi Point Injected Non Turbo EA 82 engined Loyals also use 25 spline inners, only single point injection and carb cars use 23 spline boxes.

...as far as manual boxes are concerned. My 85 GLTA sedan had 3 speed 4WD auto with 23 spline stubs, being turbo, is mpfi defies basic rule of thumb that works 99% of the time :)

 

Maybe not just any MY front axle - the 4WD are thicker than the FWD, though seen suppliers list one part for both drives recently !

uh oh... I have an MPFI EA82.   Didn't realize it had 25 spline.   But wait, it is FWD and AT... could it be 23 spline?

Now I'm curious.

which reminds me of the rarest beast delivered in Australia - 1989? EA82 GLTA 4WD actually got the 4 speed E4AT AWD box. I suspect it was 25 spline - can't say now, I threw it out - a priistine internal box - all 113kg of it, box, converter and fluid lard arse
