Hi I'm new here, but I hope that you could help an desperate guy from Denmark.

I have an Outback 3.0, from 2008, I just had it serviced, it been running around 260.000 km. When I picked it up from service the engine where going a bit up and down in rpm, not much maybe around 50 rpm. Now the other day I went for a drive, suddenly it started misfiring and it stopped by it self, and was very hard to start again. When I got home I took a look at the engine and i found a hose on the air intake chamber that was disconnected (see picture), I tried to connect it but it is still misfiring. I tried to read out engine codes and I got these C 301, 302, 303 and 304, which I think is misfire on cylinder 1, 2, 3 and 4. So now my question is can this missing hose have been causing these problems and maybe something is broken now. I will take the car back to dealer, but I'm just afraid that if something is broken he will say that it haven't anything to do with the missing hose.

Welcome to the USMB, Stoltenberg!  Good catch on the air hose.  That is totally inexcusable if you had the car at a Subaru dealership--they owe you an explanation and probably a fix!

I doubt that it broke anything.  Hopefully others here will offer help on the misfiring and hard starting.  Good luck--and keep us informed with the outcome.

Well the hose you found is the breather hose from the valve cover... should have been reconnected but would have nothing to do with your misfire/hard start problem. Is it possible that you got a tank of fuel contaminated with water ?

Hi Tom. Thanks for the answer. Now I know what the hose are for. The fuel I got in the tank I had been driving around 300 km. before the service and then this started around 100 km. after the service, but when it started misfiring it was a bit low on fuel, so I fueled the car, but it still the same. I'm thinking if there could be something else they didn't connect, another hose maybe, I would think if it was a sensor you would have an fault for this. I just think it's a bit strange, I've been driving 30.000 km in this car, and then 100 km after the service, this happen.

Welcome!

I would go back and talk to the dealer first. What did they service? Spark plugs? Timing chain? filters? Depending on what they were working, something could have been left disconnected or loose (as evidenced by the hose, so far).

If they will not do anything about the issue, I would then try to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and let it sit for approximately 30 mins. This will force the computer to "relearn" sensor data and operating ranges to accommodate the new parts on the car and for the recently reconnected hose.

Thanks. I've already been at dealer, I didn't' bring the car there because it wasn't running very well, but the guy who took care of my car where on vacation, but I was talking to another, and he just told me that I could have the car towed to their place, and pay it my self, so if that the way they think about this, I'm a bit afraid that no matter what is wrong with the car, they will say it haven't got anything to do with the service they did, and I can't prove them wrong, but I will go there again Monday, then the guy I've been talking to before, will be back, so I hope he will look different at it.

I already tried to reset the ECU as you suggest, I tried it twice but as soon as i start the car I have the same fault codes again.

So an update. The car went to the dealer this Monday, they just called me now, and told me that the EGR valve where stuck mechanically, I don't know if it was stuck open it could cause the misfire, but then he told me that the hose that wasn't fitted on the air intake chamber was blown of because the EGR valve where stuck, I don't really believe that, maybe there could some over pressure in the air intake chamber because of this, but I don't believe that the hose could be blown of by this, I would think the air would just go out through the air filter.
