June 8, 201510 yr I'm planning to replace left outer front cv joint as it is rattling when driving and turning. Very traditional phenomenon. There seem to be different information about the spline counts. The outmost (hub side) spline count is 27, that is pretty sure. but the inner side (connection to axle) spline count has some variations. Some sources say 22, some 30. Any possibilities to be sure without disassembling the joint first? The local subaru dealer would know, but their prices surely are above my limits. The car is -95 Legacy GX Sedan, 2.2 AWD, manual transmission. Thx in advance!
June 8, 201510 yr it will not be 22 or 30. It will be a an odd number like 23. and you MUST NOT get the spring pin hole 180 out of phase when assembling. I hope someone replies with specific numbers for you. Edited June 8, 201510 yr by 1 Lucky Texan
June 8, 201510 yr Author Pretty confused now... For example, this is described to fit (22 splines): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Outboard-CV-Joint-for-1990-96-Subaru-Legacy-/181745518231?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item2a50e08697&vxp=mtr This is also described to fit (30 splines) http://www.ebay.com/itm/ADS78912-SUBARU-LEGACY-1994-99-2-2i-Sal-GX-BD7-94-97-4x4-LH-Outer-CV-Joint-Kit-/301258841566?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item46246d1dde In fact I haven't found any joint with 25 splines...
June 8, 201510 yr AH - OK, I do not know the axle-shaft's spline count. (could there be a difference between 2.5 H4 and the 3.0 H6 cars?) (I thought the issue was the green 'cup' for the tripod/DOJ joint's connection to the stub in the diff) sorry. Edited June 8, 201510 yr by 1 Lucky Texan
June 8, 201510 yr looking at RockAuto.com, it appears you could have either on a manual trans - the auto only shows as 22. if you cut the boot off, you might find there's enough showing on the shaft to count.
June 10, 201510 yr 25 spline it looks like for the inner shaft (NOT THE STUB SHAFT-TO-DIFF SPLINE COUNT). Used to be the 23/25 issue with the older non-turbo vs. auto. turbo manuals. But the AWD TY75 trans, should be 25.
June 23, 201510 yr Author Ok. Changed the joint today. Correct answer is 30 teeth. Still I don't have any idea what makes the difference. Anyway I ordered a new joint hoping it would fit. Luckily the teeth count was the same. But, the new joint is 8mm longer than the old one... I hope it won't make any harm... Edited June 23, 201510 yr by 325turbo
June 23, 201510 yr I'm no expert but, IF (that's a big if) the actual - uh - centerpoint - for the articulation is the same, it might work. but, if that point is in a different position than the design requires, there's gonna be a fight with the spindle/knuckle/strut/control arms everytime it turns - (I THINK)
July 3, 201510 yr Author I changed today also the right joint. Easy job This new joint also was 8mm longer than the old one. I measured the whole axle length with the old joint and with the new joint installed. No difference within measuring accuracy. So, I guess there will be no problems.
