Anyone had luck removing shims to fix a/c clutch?

So when I switch on my a/c from int the car, it doesn't work. Car will bog down and go back up. However, if I poke the a/c clutch with a screwdriver, it kicks in and all is well. I hear the XJ guys talking about removing shims to make it work. Anyone done thise to a soob? 95 impreza btw
