Leaking coolant from intake gasket?

Featured Replies

So I noticed today that the car... 87 gl sedan with a weber... is leaking coolant from right where my intake bolts to the head on my driver side.  Idk why it would be leaking there, is there a coolant line there?  I know there is the actual coolant line running by the intake there but it is clearly leaking from the gasket between the head and intake.  Can anybody shed some light on why it would be leaking there?

Coolant goes through the intake....  Replace with OEM Subaru gaskets and it will be fine.

Thanks.  I figured it was just a gasket replacement.

This is definitely one of those parts that you buy OEM. There are brands that resell old Subaru inventory or make the gaskets to OEM specs, so you dont have to go to the dealer. I guess the point Im trying to make is; do not use the thick paper ones (Felpro). Unless you plan to do the gaskets again in 8 months.

Often the 6 bolts that hold the manifold to the head are difficult to remove. I have found the best way to remove them is to run the car until it is at normal operating temperature. Then gently work them out, while it is still hot.

Absolutely right.  Turn a little back tighten.  Turn a little tighten.  Reinstall with Copper coat or Never Seize.^^^^^^^

And if its bad enough to leak, be gentle during removal youll probably snap one or two.

I have not snapped a bolt since discovering the patiently work them out while hot trick. Some were very stuck.

Thanks everybody. I stopped by the dealer today and picked them up. Didn't have any issues with the bolts. I don't have it apart yet I just pulled the bolts out and cleaned them up. I'll get back to it on Saturday

Anybody know off hand what the torque is on the 6 bolts?

Thirteen to sixteen foot pounds
