Stripped Timing Belt Tensioner Bracket 98 EJ22

Featured Replies

While removing the timing belt tensioner on 98 ej22 the the timing belt tensioner bracket stripped the m10x1.5  bolt hole that secures the tensioner to bracket. I got this engine as a replacement for 95 ej22 from purchased wrecking yard. The 95 ej 22 had stripped tensioner bracket and stripped water pump bolts.

What tensioner / bracket will work for this 98 ej22. Repairing the bracket with  Heli-Coil or Time Sert seems more than a new or used bracket. I have a tensioner/ bracket from the 95 ej22, but thats stripped too.

Here are the pictures of my two stripped brackets.

Check in the parts for sale section. Pretty sure a couple people have timing parts for sale, they may have one they can send you. The 95 style is the more reliable of the two.

Can I use the 95 style in place of the 98 style?

Yes, if you swap the 95 tensioner bracket as well. Bolts right up. I reversed it and put 99 stuff in place of a 96 once in a pinch. It all fits and works fine.

That actually isn't super uncommon, last time it happened to me I brought it past my local machine shop. They put a helicoil in it and sold me a 3/8" bolt for like $10. Took them 10 minutes an I was out the door.
