1999 forester automatic trans problem

Featured Replies

guys

i picked up a 99 forester last year. car had a bad motor so i pulled it and rebuilt. after the rebuild the trans started to give me trouble right after the rebuild of the motor. trans works perfect when cold. all gears reverse and forward engage perfectly no delay right there. after the motor warms up i have nothing. you put the car in drive and you can hear the gears grinding in the trans. put it in reverse the same thing . you put the car back in park you can hear the parking poll clicking until the trans slows down enough to engage and the whole time this is happening the car acts like it is in neutral. you let the car cool down 10 minutes or so sometimes longer the trans shifts perfect.  I have no trans codes not even pending codes. i have no engine codes. i replaced the trans computer and i also replaced the transmission with the same results. I am running out of ides . i hope you guys have a direction i can go in   thanks

I check all of the joints. no luck.  i am wondering if i have a wireing problem in the harness or a bad engine ecm. does the computers control the main lock up clutch. It seems to start happening when the engine computer goes closed loop.  I unplugged the engine temp sender to see if i held the computer in open loop would it stop form actiing up. when i did this the trans would not work at all  .

checking fluid level while idling right?

2 different trans did this?

did you swap old front diff onto the replacement trans?

New trains was flushed with new correct casttol ford dextron fluid. New trans filter. I used everything from the donar car. Transaxle and converter. All electronic that were on the Trans also. Does anybody know how the. Computers play a role in it. Is it possible for the engine computer or the trans computer messing up to make this happen. Could I have a bad harness or engine computer. Or another bad trans. The one I got was from a junk yard it was claimed to be tested good.

Parking pawl engages the output drum for the front pinion shaft. Pinion shaft and output drum are solid linked, no clutches or electronics, solid steel connection from the output drum to the pinion to diff to axles.

If the parking pawl is grinding when trying to engage park, it's because the output drum is spinning, which means the diff is spinning, which means at least one of the axles is spinning.

i just wanted to thank you for helping me   I have a feeling i have a bad axle hub. I am going to check them this weekend and ill report back.  It must have enough spline left on one of them to grab cold and then slip after it warms up. the previous owner replaced both axles shafts with ebay ones. it possible the splines on one of them could also be bad.

If it's not an axle it could also be the inner stub that sticks into the differential.

Those aren't normally supposed to be removed, but on the auto trans they can pop out.

figured out what was going on with that automatic transmission. i jacked the car up and spun the wheels by hand. come to find out the replacement transmission has a bad transaxel . the spider gears or one os the gears must have a few teeth gone. when you spin the tire you can feel the gears engage  you get in the car and drive and reverse work. you spin the tires on jack stands and then you get nothing as soon as the gears hit the bad spot. so i am switching the trans mission out again thanks for the help
