May 30, 200421 yr Rethinking my needs I'm looking at switching from a wagon to a sedan. From any onwers of turbo Legacy's, what feedback and opinions do you have. Is the gain in HP and turbo worth it? In it a headache to maintain?
May 30, 200421 yr I'm on Subie #5, which is a Legacy Turbo. I love the extra oomph from the turbo, but I'm not so nuts about the lower gas mileage. (Especially needing higher octane gas!) Other than that, I would do it again in a heartbeat! (By the way, I've had a couple of wagons and a couple sedans, and I really do like having things in the trunk, out of sight when we travel.)
May 30, 200421 yr Author Having a secure trunk is one of the main reasons for my wanting to switch. Do you need medium or premium grade in a turbo? What kinda MPG do you see.
May 30, 200421 yr I don't know what the current generation requires. My '94 needs 92 or better octane. I consistently get 25 MPG. (But then again, most of my miles are highway.)
May 30, 200421 yr I love my 93 Turbo Wagon. I also drive a 93 L sedan sometimes, and the extra power is definetly better. 92 or better octane should be used. I get between 20 and 25 mpg depending on a trip or local or if I stay off off the boost, which is hard:)
June 1, 200421 yr My opinion is to make sure you get a good one!! I bought mine pretty cheap ($600), but it needed quite a bit of work. IF you get one that's well taken care of, they're great cars. If you get one that wasn't, it could be a headache unless you're mechanically inclined. I actually enjoy driving it more than my SVX and our WRX. The fact that it's a total sleeper is the icing on the cake. I've spent about $3k getting it to it's present condition which includes a new engine and tranny. In hindsight, I should have waited a bit longer for the right one, but overall I'm still happy with my car. Be sure to look out for rust. Luckily mine has very little rust because it came from WV. It now runs like a dream and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Yes the gas mileage is crappy if you do a lot of in town driving. Highway driving I average about 25 mpg and I've gotten as high as 28 mpg ( with a light foot). Check out http://bbs.legacycentral.org for more information on the turbo's. It's a great site that I refer to quite often when I need info. Good luck, Bobby
