ea81 interior questions

Featured Replies

So I've started a few post about my 84 gl 4WD sedan which I'm cleaning up and weighing my options still on seats and dash (ie to replace repair etc). As I weight these options, I'm on the look out for blue seats and an uncracked dash. But I'm not sure what cars had the same seats. Ive seen a few pictures of ea81 gl wagons with seats that look different, but the pictures I saw were not of a 1984...So is the difference a year to year difference or sedan/wagon difference? Will I also find different dashes?

In case your wondering which seats exactly I'm talking about, they are the same style as the black sedan owned by gloyale posted in this thread http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/142645-lets-talk-about-gen-2-interior-colors/

And before people get carried away, I know I can do some fab work and put in newer seats, but I'd prefer to keep the original ones (either replace or repair)

Thanks!

Really can't help on the seats but, from personal experience, some good quality sheep skin seat covers do wonders for comfort.

Seats really didn't change much over the years.  The difference is whether or not the car was 4wd or 2wd.  4wd cars had the vinyl on the side bolsters and a different design of cloth on the center where as 2wd cars had full fabric.  Then depending on color you could get different grades of fabric.  My tan sedan and coupe were both 83s with the same interior and it was a pretty thick strong feeling fabric if that makes sense.  My blue 86 hatch had velour like fabric.  All were 2wd however.

Ok yea the ones in my car have dark blue vinyl on the sides while the middle is a light colored cloth with a pattern of small blue checkers. So I'm likely to find similar seats in 4WD ea81 cars rather than 2WD?

At this point you'll be lucky to find EA81 seats that aren't torn or just plain trashed, in any color.  Especially the driver's seat.  As for patterns, material and thickness of the upholstery, I've found that the later model year and higher up the ladder you go (in EA81's) the better quality the material is. Example: the seat in a 1981 DL is usually not as nice as one in an '84 GL-10 or Turbo.  IIRC all seats within the EA81 chassis are interchangeable=direct bolt in.

Just my 2 bucks
