November 28, 201510 yr Hello. I'm new here making my first post I just bought a 1995 Legacy to replace my 2000 Outback that's having head gasket issues for the third time in three years. Anyway, the new one has some issues that I was curious about. First, it needs a new alternator. Can I use the one that's in the Outback or will I need to buy one? Second, the Legacy is having minor overheating issues. As in it starts heating up when I go up hills, but the needle never tops out and it will cool down once I'm over the hill. Please please tell me this is an easy fix. I'll scream if I end up with another head gasket issue.
November 28, 201510 yr Not sure about the alternator, you can cross reference the part numbers and see if they match. A couple of things you can check on the heating issues: Replace the old radiator cap with a new Stant cap.Replace the thermostat with a ginuine Subaru one NOT aftermarket. If you even think the antifreeze is old or diluted, drain it and put fresh in when you change out the thermostat.
November 29, 201510 yr I would also add that you should check to see that the fan(s) are running. Start the car, turn on the a/c at least 1 fan should run. Let it idle, the other should start when the temp gets around half guage.
November 29, 201510 yr Check the coolant level. Get a rebuilt alternator from the dealer. There was a recall on those years ago and they are available rebuilt for about $70 from the dealer.
November 30, 201510 yr Overheating issue, I would check coolant level first but there's a good chance you need a new radiator. Get one online they are about $100-$125.
