2011 Legacy Limited - mysterious white powder (interior)

Featured Replies

Hi,

My first post, so please be gentle. I bought a used 2011 Legacy 2.5l Limited a few weeks back and have noticed a strange issue with it right away.

On the interior surfaces a day or two after buying the car, I noticed white flakes on the dashboard, steering column and top of the front doors. It wasn't there when I bought car obviously as I would have noticed it and it was probably cleaned up by the dealer as not to arouse any suspicion. It looks like dandruff.

I thought that it must have been residue from the cleaning products used to prep. the car or possibly residue from when it was waxed. I took to it with a Swiffer and it when away.......temporarily.  It is now back worse than ever.

If I didn't know better I would say that this powdery stuff is coming from the interior vents. It is like lint but when I press it, is smears like talcum powder. I keep a Swiffer in my car now at all times and am worried that this maybe a sign of a larger problem lurking under the hood.

The car has 71,000kms (I'm in Montreal) and was serviced prior to me picking it up on 11th December 2015. Other than that, the previous owner bought the car from that dealer and sold it back to them when he traded up. I'm thinking that the dealer should have a service history on the car.

I also bought an extended warranty from the dealer.

Has anyone ever seen this before or would know what this is?

Thanks, Daniel

Daniel--strongly suggest that you take the car back to the dealership.  Talk to the Manager--ask him what they can do about it.

If you get flak, post back here and let us know.  Good luck.
