Engine Tap at start and high revs

Featured Replies

A question for the forum:

I've got a 91 Subaru Loyale and it has started tapping (a hard tap similar to a turbo diesel) on startup for a few seconds and again at high intermediate revs. Wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this.

The two options that I can think of are knocking due to dirty engine (I drove mostly in the city), or pistons actually contacting valves due to carbonization (yikes!). Any other suggestions and how to fix this?

have same problem with 86 gl drained oil put one Quart of 20 w 50 back in with one gallon of diesal fuel let idle for 10 minutes drained real good change oil filter and oil. Seemd to help alot.oil passages get blocked this cleans them!

My 91 Loyale taps when it's low on oil. Or it's over 4000 miles per oil change.

mine makes a hard tapping noise near the camcase when I start the car after a long time (1 month or so or more) of letting it sit. It goes away after it gets fully warmed up.
