intermittent gear grinding when starting

84 GL wagon 1.8 non-turbo 4x4.

The past few days when I start the motor, it sounds like the starter motor gears aren't fully engaging, kinda goes in and out and I hear the sound of metal teeth grinding. So far, it seems to be worse when the car is cold. I have been parking on hills just in case, but it has started the last 10-15 times, sometimes with noise, and sometimes with none.  The starter is hardwired to a push button toggle on the dash as the ignition switch went out 10 years ago.

Do I need a shim job, or a complete overhaul. Could it be an electric problem?  More importantly, is this something that needs immediate attention? - Will I do unrepairable damage if I let it go too long?  I have a hunch, but would like to hear the voice of experience.

just replace the starter. i had starting issues for a long time of only hearing a click and i kept getting told, its the switch not the starter cuz a starter needs lots of use to go bad. i also have push button start as my key ignition looks like it got hit my a meat grinder...anyways, after replacing the starter a few months ago, ive had zero starter related issues. you can get them from your local parts store for a decent price.
