  1. either really. i found a shop that will do it soon, just don't have any experience with them. hoping for some local advice.
  2. haha. I just meant that it doesn't stall out immediately. I just did all the brakes.
  3. just looking for a good mechanic for my 84GL. I was going to have Rick and Matt (in Oregon City) help me, but the fingers are screaming hard, and she goes with the brakes on. the throw out bearing has been complaining for about 2000 miles, and finally took a $&^*! thanks
  4. 84 GL wagon 273000, original clutch I believe.
  5. 84 GL wagon 1.8 non-turbo 4x4. The past few days when I start the motor, it sounds like the starter motor gears aren't fully engaging, kinda goes in and out and I hear the sound of metal teeth grinding. So far, it seems to be worse when the car is cold. I have been parking on hills just in case, but it has started the last 10-15 times, sometimes with noise, and sometimes with none. The starter is hardwired to a push button toggle on the dash as the ignition switch went out 10 years ago. Do I need a shim job, or a complete overhaul. Could it be an electric problem? More importantly, is this something that needs immediate attention? - Will I do unrepairable damage if I let it go too long? I have a hunch, but would like to hear the voice of experience.
  6. Update: it was the CV Joint. General Disorder replaced the axle in about 15 minutes. no more pulling.
  7. update. the passenger side wheel has a little play side to side, but not from top to bottom. it has play when my hands are at 3-9 o'clock. I looked at everything under there, and the only thing that seems to be absorbing this movement is the axle. so...my best uneducated guess is that the cv joint is toast, and I am getting the pull to the left from one wheel drive, and the bad axle operates smooth at higher speeds because...??? its bound up at lower sppeds and starts working again at higher ones? any speculation is welcome here. thanks
  8. Thanks Joe. I will jack it up and give a shake.
  9. I searched, and didn't find the answer. I know the CV is going, passenger side front boot cracked about 5000miles ago and is clicking, but just sometimes. All of a sudden, last night after getting off the highway, the car started pulling really hard to the left and it felt like there was wobble or play in one of the front tires, it felt like one wheel was just drifting around. But ONLY at low speeds, and disappearing with acceleration. above 40 it's fine. I was a little scared to drive fast fearing a wheel falling off or something and limped home. Today, I looked under the car, wheel weights are on, and no visible issues with steering components tie rods or axles. What can cause this? Is it safe to drive to the parts store, or am I pushing it? thanks USMB
  10. Bump. this exact thing just happened to me. Wondering what you ended up doing and how it worked. Thanks to all the posters for the part numbers!
  11. ahhhh. thanks for the advice! it does look thermostat like from what I can see through a 3mm hole.
  12. questions: is this what I think it is, and how important is it? thanks to all who helped me with the last issues, now I found the real culprit as to where coolant was leaking. apparently the little plastic piece is called a Termocontrol valve assembly (described it to a shop and that's the answer I got). it is a little plastic elbow with some kind of valve in it, has ~13mm bolt on the end of it. not sure how one would turn the bolt, as the plastic it is threaded into is crap. it might be heat activated. the valve is connecting on both ends by 1/4"ID hose. location of this piece: from the water pump, there is a rubber elbow hose about 6" long that connects to a metal T under the air filter (not in it), and behind the alternator. the top of the T connects to heater hose that goes through the firewall. the stick part of the T has a 1"piece of what looks like 1/4"ID hose connecting to the plastic piece I described above. following that plastic elbow, the next piece of hose connects to the base of the hitachi carb. so, I am in there, now I don't exactly know where to go from here. my instinct tells me to skip it and just leave it out of the picture. my instinct also tells me I am an idiot and will probably screw something up and should as a professional. thanks again USMB
