i have extended warranty on my 2006 impreza the only problem is it costs 115 bucks for them to read the test engine light and fix the problem. so i went to autozone for free and it said third cylinder miss fire could be plugs,wires or coil, so i did the kiss pricipal and changed the wires first after checking with an ohm meter found out the no.3 wire was bad. changed the plug wires and no more miss fire and it has lots of power. but i remember the stealership  swearing they did a tune up now i am wondering what else they skipped on.

Typically a tune up doesn`t mean that the spark wires get replaced.

 

As well, now that the warranty is off the car, find a good independent mechanic to do your work. They don`t charge the prices that the dealerships do because they don`t have the overhead costs for the fancy building and parts stock.

Wires are a common cause of a crappy idle, etc..  Under $40 or so, even OEM.

I have never believed that extended warranty insurance is a good deal, especially for Subarus. Subarus don't break down that often, or cost that much to repair.

tune up may or may not include wiires. Always get an itemized list of what anyone is going to do/has done whether it's an independant shop, dealership, or brother-in-law under a tree for a few beers.

 

Extended "warrany"s aren't warranties, they're service agreements. As such, you must read the fine print of what the agreement is. You're right, they're generally not worth it for anyone that does their own work, more for newer vehicles with more expensive parts covering major failures that will be fixed by a shop.
