2001 Outback Motor 2.5 into 2003 Outback -need some confirming info

Featured Replies

I have a quick question for you all.

I have a 2003 2.5 outback automatic trans with a bad motor.  I also picked up a 2001 2.5 Outback motor with an automatic trans that has a nice running motor but a rusty body.  I was going to swap the 2001 into the 2003, but I hear it is not an exact swap.

Can someone help what what is different?  I have read that the cam and crank sprockets are not the same and that possibly some sensors need to be swapped for the 03 motor?

Anyone?

I have the motor out of the 2003 already.

Yes, cam and crank sprockets might be different. The only way you can be sure is to compare. Beyond that, the 2001 engine might not have an EGR but the 2003 engine should have one if it's an EJ253 I think. EJ251's were still used in 2003 though.

You will need to keep the original intake manifold with the car. They are not interchangable

Thanks very much.  They look the same and both have EGR's.  I will look closer at the block and see if they are both EJ251's.   But for sure you say the intakes needs to stay with the car.

Intakes should be the same, but use the original if it's good. Make sure to use the original flex plate from the 03. Other than that it should be direct swap.
